Meet your AB YSOP:NY Team!
AB YSOP:NY is one of the sixteen trips under Alternative Breaks @ UCSD. Alternative Breaks@UCSD is part of a movement spanning across many colleges and universities in the United States. With more than 140 participating schools, 1467 trips, and 622,764 service hours, alternative breakers from across the country are challenging social justice issues in an effort to instill positive change in our communities.
Our trip's title: Homelessness, Poverty, & Youth Development: Service Learning in Inner-City Communities
Our goal is to emphasize personal interactions through direct service by providing opportunities to impoverished individuals and build awareness about the complexity of the poverty cycle. In order to make a positive impact, we hope to emulate the daily lifestyle of the impoverished individual through companionship and participating in programs that aim to help the impoverished. Moreover, we will be participating in youth development in the pursuance of allowing these youth and children to transition to stable and successful lifestyles.

THE SITE LEADERS
Why did you choose the social justice issue of urban poverty and homelessness?
One of the main reasons why we chose these two social issues is to be educated about the root causes of poverty and homelessness here in the United States. We believe that learning these causes will enable us to find ways to bring a positive impact to different individuals, families, and communities who are impoverished or do not have a place to call home.
We also hope to gain a better understanding of these social issues through personal interactions with people who are homeless or impoverished. We want to listen to their stories, make connections, and provide companionship for the people we will meet and interact with during our service week in New York.
Why did you want to work with YSOP:NY?
Our main goal is to maximize our time interacting with people and learning about the complexities of poverty and we feel that this non-profit will provide us the opportunity to meet these important goals. What made them stand out is their emphasis on making personal connections with other people through direct interactions and communication.
